I don’t normally do recipe posts on Sundays, but it’s been a pretty abnormal week, so we’re gonna keep going with it. We lived off Easter leftovers and some random recipe I tried out last week, so there isn’t much of a meal plan to show. Unless you want to count on making this healthy and easy puppy chow as your meal plan—in which case, I am totally on board.

Puppy chow will always remind me of middle school. Dirt cups and puppy chow were two treats that were always made by 7th and 8th grade in our Home Ec classes. Fairly often, there were puppy chow and dirt cup sales after school for $0.50 a piece. I don’t really remember why they were being sold since we students would have loved to take it all home or what the money generated was going towards. Though, I’m sure it was probably to fund Home Ec itself. Some of the classes really got into it, and I remember the grade above me had even crafted a jingle for sale to broadcast over the intercom. I’m not gonna sing it for you, but I still remember Heidi Rusch singing the song to this day.

You should all be very thankful I’m not singing it for you because it’s really quite catchy, and you’d probably never forget it either.

My actual decision to make puppy chow recipe was pretty spur of the moment. I’ve actually been trying to avoid this when it comes to recipes I’m going to test for the blog. A few weekends ago, my original plan was to make sweet potato noodle taco bowls and a green smoothie. I had my grocery list is written, complete with the garnishes I wanted for the photos. While I was at the grocery, I got a sudden hankering for puppy chow. SO random. But Whaddaya know, the green smoothie ingredients went off the list in place of chocolate chips and Rice Chex cereal for a healthy puppy chow recipe instead. That’s a pregnant woman in her finest moment.

How to make puppy chow?

The basic ingredients for this puppy chow are the same but lightened up a bit. I also skipped the butter and powdered sugar altogether. To prevent the Chex from being sticky after coating with chocolate and peanut butter, I tossed them in oat flour instead! That’s why this puppy chow looks a little darker than normal. The oat powder soaks up but doesn’t leave the Chex a big mess. Plus, it saves on all the extra sugars!

I’d say that I ate the vast majority of this batch of puppy chow myself for obvious reasons. Kyle really enjoyed it, but he’s trying to stay away from sweets. He also probably figured it was in his best interest to note take the last serving…

…as it turns out, baby girl likes her puppy chow!
